  • 2 cups macaroni uncooked (equal to ½ lb.)
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • ½ cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup milk
  • ½ teaspoon mustard powder
  • ¼ teaspoon onion powder
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ¼ teaspoon pepper
  • ½ teaspoon hot sauce
  • 1 ½ cups cheddar cheese shredded

Cooking Instructions

  • Shred the cheese from a block for better melting and taste.
  • Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil and add the macaroni.
  • Cook according to package instructions, set a timer to avoid overcooking, then drain.
  • Melt butter in a large pot over medium heat, then stir in the flour for 1-2 minutes.
  • Add the heavy cream and milk in splashes, stirring continuously.
  • Bring to a boil and reduce to a simmer, then add seasonings and hot sauce.
  • Gradually sprinkle in the shredded cheese, stirring until smooth and combined.
  • Add the drained macaroni and stir to combine, then serve.

Notes

I recommend using Cracker Barrel Sharp Yellow Cheese for this recipe. Hot sauce and mustard powder are flavor enhancers and won't be tasted in the final dish. Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days or frozen for up to 3 months.
